The IVF Journey Explained: Step-by-Step Guide for Couples

Taking the first step towards In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) can feel overwhelming. At our clinic in Zirakpur, we believe that education empowers couples and significantly reduces the anxiety associated with fertility treatments. Let’s demystify the IVF process step-by-step.

Step 1: Ovarian Stimulation

A typical natural cycle produces one mature egg. In IVF, we want to maximize the chances of success by retrieving multiple eggs. Through precisely timed injectable fertility medications, we stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature follicles over a period of 10 to 14 days. We monitor this process closely with blood tests and ultrasounds.

Step 2: Egg Retrieval

Once the follicles reach the optimal size, a "trigger shot" is administered. Exactly 36 hours later, the egg retrieval is performed. This is a minor surgical procedure done under mild sedation. A thin needle is guided via ultrasound to gently aspirate the fluid containing the eggs from the ovaries. It is painless and usually takes about 15-20 minutes.

Step 3: Fertilization and Embryo Culture

On the same day, a sperm sample is collected and prepared. Our expert embryologists will then combine the eggs and sperm in the lab. In cases of male factor infertility, we may use ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), where a single sperm is directly injected into an egg. Over the next 3 to 5 days, the fertilized eggs (embryos) are cultured in specialized incubators.

Step 4: Embryo Transfer

The final step is placing the best quality embryo(s) back into the uterus. This is a simple, painless procedure similar to a pap smear, requiring no anesthesia. A thin catheter is used to place the embryo precisely into the uterine cavity.
